  1. I'm hoping to visit this area of Mexico next year - especially to see the Mayan Ruins in Chichen Itza. Did you love Playa del Carmen? It looks like a cool spot. If you've got any insider tips you'd like to share - I'm all ears!

Much love - from San Francisco :-D

  2. Hey Mallory!

Mexico was a first for me, so maybe this info is a little to basic for you but here we go:

Yeah Playa del Carmen was really fun - we stayed at an all-inclusive (the Riu Playacar) and I will say that the food was mediocre. If you stay at a mid-level Riu resort, breakfast and lunch buffets were decent but plan on going out for dinner. Wherever you end up going, just ask a hotel staff member you trust where to eat to get good seafood, that worked for us. The service was exceptional! And the beach was wonderful of course. We took a ferry from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel for dinner, which was fun. We really tried to get into the authentic restaurants and away from the touristy stuff. I would've loved to go to some ruins, we didn't get a chance to work it in this trip.

Don't be afraid to barter with the merchants and for sure shop around for the best exchange rate. The airport is not good - the best I saw was over in Cozumel, which I was surprised by. I didn't work that out before we left so there was a bit of a scramble. Also they love when you use American dollars, so have your math skills handy if you don't exchange. Know that if you use your credit cards there are often extra charges, as well as with your cell phone so research that ahead of time. Also, I wished I researched how to tip when I was down there - I still don't really know, but you kinda should tip everyone and I always was worried if I was over/under tipping.

Not much was going on over in Cozumel in the evening because I think it was the off season. I like Playa del Carmen because it wasn't filled with stupid spring breakers. There were a lot European and Mexican tourists, so I thought that was a good sign.

Hope this info helps! Let me know if you have any more questions :)
